The Colosseum is a wonder because it was built in a time where there was no electricity or construction tools to make it, but yet it was made and it is still standing! Also it was a very important entertainment area a long time ago, but then an earthquake occurred and destroyed it, leaving the Colosseum in ruins. This wonder is beautiful despite the fact it is half torn down, and the Colosseum is so huge it can hold 50,000 people!
The date the Colosseum was built was A.D. 70 to A.D. 82 in Rome Italy, but the architect for the Colosseum is unknown. Although the person who commissioned it to be built was Vespasian who ruled in Italy from A.D. 69 to A.D. 79, although he never saw the final product. The architecture takes on many styles such as Ancient Roman, Classical, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian engaged columns, and Corinthian pilasters. It was made with brick and concrete, with stone and marble covering the exterior. Decades later the Pope had the marble removed for churches to be built. The Colosseum is also know as the Flavian Amphitheater, and can also be spelled Coliseum. It used to be filled with water but then it was drained so that it could be used as an entertainment area for gladiator contests, as well as the gladiator games, and other public entertainment.
The Colosseum is a very special wonder because it was built in a hard time, and yet is still standing today.
